What is crisis care?
Here's What You Need to Know
Crisis hospice care is a specialized level of care offered to terminally ill patients who are experiencing a sudden decline in their health. It is typically provided in the home on a round-the-clock basis. Crisis hospice care is generally covered by all insurance companies including Medical and Medicare, and it can be an invaluable resource for patients and families during difficult times. Perennial Hospice crisis care teams are specially trained to provide supportive care and pain management, and they can also offer emotional and spiritual support to patients and families. If you or someone you love is facing a terminal illness, crisis hospice care may be an option worth considering.
Hospice crisis care is to alleviate uncontrolled symptoms in a time of acute crisis. Below are some examples of symptoms may include:
- Severe pain ( Intractable Pain )
- Bleeding
- Acute respiratory distress
- Intractable ( Uncontrollable ) vomiting or nausea
- Terminal agitation or restlessness
Crisis Care services are predominantly nursing care, supplemented with caregiver and hospice aide services. This type of care is intended to maintain the patient’s comfort at home during a pain or symptom crisis.
Is hospice care
right for you?
Hospice care does not include curative treatment. The goal of hospice care is to provide comfort and support rather than to cure the disease. Hospice may not include medications you have grown accustomed to taking, such as chemotherapy or other medical supplements. Instead, hospice focuses on providing palliative care – treatments that relieve pain and other symptoms – to help you live as comfortably as possible during your final days. If you are considering hospice care for yourself or a loved one, discuss all of your options with a Perennial Hospice team to ensure that you are making the best decision for your situation.

The practice of offering around-the-clock hospice care at home is known as “continuous care.” According to the CMS regulations generally state: “Continuous home care may only be provided during a period of crisis as necessary to maintain an individual at home. A period of crisis is a period in which a patient requires continuous care that is predominantly nursing care to achieve palliation or management of acute medical symptoms.”
When is the right time for crisis care?
Certified by Medicare and Medi-Cal
The Perennial Hospice team is specially trained to identify when a patient’s needs have changed and continuous care may be appropriate. For example, if a patient is experiencing increased pain despite following the current medication routine, the hospice team will reassess the situation and decide if continuous care is needed. If the decision is made to provide continuous care, a nurse will be assigned to the case and will work closely with the patient and family to ensure that all of the patient’s needs are met. The nurse will also develop a plan of care that includes pain management, symptom control, and emotional support. By working closely with the Perennial Hospice team, patients and families can be assured that they will receive the best possible care during this difficult time.
Get intensive level of support
Crisis care program customized for your needs
Although it may be scary to think about receiving this type of care, the benefits of continuous hospice care are actually quite huge.
- One of the biggest benefits of continuous hospice care is that it provides patients with 24/7 access to pain relief. This is incredibly important for people who are dealing with terminal illnesses, as their pain levels can be extremely high.
- It allows symptomatic patients to achieve their goal of comfortably living out the remainder of their days, weeks, or months at home.
- It provides families with access to a team of dedicated individuals who specialize solely in this level of care. Dealing with a terminal illness is incredibly difficult, both emotionally and mentally. Having someone there to provide support and comfort can make all the difference in the world. The hospice team educates the family and helps them to understand the process and what their loved one is experiencing.
- Also, this intensive level of support gives caregivers the ability to step back and be exactly what they are in the patient’s life: a spouse, a child, a grandchild, niece, or nephew. It is the gift of being present and informed but with the burden of hands-on care lifted.
